Adam Cole Reveals Being Called to Face Daniel Bryan Last Minute in 2019

On the “Swerve City” podcast, Adam Cole revealed the frantic circumstances leading up to his match on the November 1, 2019 episode of WWE SmackDown. With much of the roster unavailable due to travel delays from WWE Crown Jewel 2019, NXT Superstars, including Cole, were called in. Cole, the NXT Champion at the time, was set to defend his title against Daniel Bryan, who had not attended the event in Saudi Arabia.
Cole recounted the last-minute call he received at 1 p.m., which led to a hurried preparation. With the airport 50 minutes away and only an hour to get there, Cole managed to pack and rush to the airport. He arrived at the arena by 8:30 p.m., thanks to a police escort in Buffalo, New York, and was in the ring with Bryan within an hour.
Reflecting on the experience, Cole said, “I didn’t have time to be nervous.” This unexpected match would later echo when Cole and Danielson crossed paths again in AEW, both debuting at the All Out 2021 event.
