Tony Khan Discusses Impact of Mercedes Mone’s Injury on AEW-NJPW Collaboration

Tony Khan, the president of All Elite Wrestling (AEW), has suggested that the injury sustained by Mercedes Mone could potentially alter the plans for the AEW and New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW) collaboration, in the Forbidden Door.

During the NJPW Resurgence event, Mercedes Mone was defeated by Willow Nightingale, who became the inaugural NJPW STRONG Women’s Champion. However, the match was overshadowed by a severe ankle injury that Mone suffered, which led to a change in the planned outcome of the bout.

In the AEW Double Or Nothing media call, as reported by PWInsider, Khan was asked about the match between Nightingale and Mone. He acknowledged that Nightingale’s victory could be seen as an upset, as she capitalized on Mone’s injury. He further revealed that AEW has plans for Nightingale, which is why she was sent to NJPW when they requested a top star for the tournament.

Regarding Mercedes Mone and her injury, Khan stated, “no one knows except Mercedes and myself” what was going to happen with her appearing exclusively in New Japan or possibly making an appearance in AEW.

The AEW and NJPW collaboration will culminate in the Forbidden Door pay-per-view event, scheduled to take place in Toronto, Ontario, Canada on June 25.
